Volunteer Spotlight
Meet Joe Monhart

He’s seen people cry with gratitude.

We spent a few moments with Joe Monhart to discuss his dedication to CSM. For over two years, Joe has been spending Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays volunteering his time at our Food Pantry. Occasionally, he also helps at the Thrift Store, such as a big Saturday sale day. Retired from the Army, and from security work at NASA, Joe was encouraged by his wife and a long time friend to check out the Food Pantry as a volunteer opportunity. After day one, he’s never left.

His typical day of volunteering begins about 9:30am as he preps food boxes for individuals. Then, the food truck comes and Joe helps unload. He puts dry goods away and meat into freezers. Prior to the pandemic, clients would come in and pick their own food. Now, clients sit in their cars and Joe wears a mask as he signs them in and carries food out to their cars. Over the years, he has gotten to know many of the people, although he’s seeing a lot of new folks, including case workers who can request up to 3 boxes for clients.

When asked to reflect on his time, Joe shared how he enjoys helping the people in need. He’s seen people cry with gratitude. He tries to personalize the experience and even bring special desserts or freezer pops out to the kids.  Joe comments that, “Most days, I love it!”   As with any job worth doing, it has its challenges.  Joe’s positive attitude keeps him coming back.  The work he does touches hundreds of families each week.  To continue this volunteer service during a pandemic is even more admirable.

We value the countless hours Joe’s dedicated to helping the Second Mile Food Pantry run smoothly and serve so many. We look forward to his continued involvement with Church Street Ministries/Second Mile Outreach. Thank you Joe, for making a difference in our community during your 2+ years of service!
